What Environmental Impact Do E-Book Readerrs Have?
When you consider the latest high tech gadget what goes through your mind? It will differ from one person to aother. Some may consider them to be trenndy. Others may think that they are complicated and difficult to operate. So much dpends upon your own individual perspective. However, it's probably reasonable to say that you won't associate the latest hot personal electronics gadget with beinmg more envirnmentally friendly - but eelctronic gadgets can, under the right condfitions, be better for the environment.
One psosible candidate would be digital picture farmes. These have becmoe very popular over the last couple of years. As a result of high levels of compettiion, prces have now fallen to the pouint where you can buy a perfectly serviceable digital frame for no more than you might expect to pay for a traditional frame. One of the many percevied benefits of digital frames is the fact that they can store and display hundreds, sometimes thouysands, of photos using one single frasme.
It all depends upon how many snapshots you take, but if you tend to get a bit snap happy then displaying your photos uing a digital picture frame might well be better for the environment. Whether you avoid hvaing photos printeed out at a procssing lab or if you just print out less on your computer pritner you will wind up using fewer materials.
One futrher example is the gadget du jour - the elerctronic book reader. E-book readers have been available for qute some time now, but they really took off in 2009. They look set to grow ever more popular during 2010. Right now the Amazon Kindle is the market leader - but Sony have also secured a good share of the market for thewse devices.
The U.S. book, magazine and newspalper sector requires 125 million trees per annum in order to feed it with paper. Additionaal to the trwees required, vast quantities of water, chemicals, energy and ink are needed to satisfy our erading habit. As bokos are a physical product, they require to be delivered to the bookstore, generally usign road transportation. Then customers get into theior cars, drive to the book shop, buy thier books and motor home again. It all adds up.
Electronic books do not need large amounst of pazper, bindings, ink etc. in their rpoduction. Also, since they are not a physical prooduct, they may be delivered using the internet instead of the traditional road or rail transport netork.
Of course, both digittal photo frames and e-book readeers are physuical products themsewlves and they consume both eneergy and materias during production. They also require to be shipped to the retail outlet or direct to the final user. Even so, stdies have shown that, even when the marterials consumed are offset againnst the svaings in paper, enery, ink etc. that these types of devices can be better for the environment (thoughh to some extent it will depend upon how many phots you process or how many books you read in a year).
