If you want to truly lose weight you should not begin by counting calories. You should follow sound principles of nutrition:
First Pillar - Eat five or six meals a day.
Second Pillar - Limit your consumption of sugar or processed foods.

Third Pillar - Eat more fruits and vegetables.
Pillar 4 - Drink more water and cut out calorie-containing beverages.
Pillar 5 - Focus on consuming lean proteins throughout the day.
6th Pillar - Save starch-containing foods until after your workouts or for breakfast.

These pillars, or steps are progressive and one leads naturally to the next one. These pillars facilitate a lifestyle change rather than a crash diet that rarely works and often creates a yo-yo effect on a person’s weight.

If you follow these principles you will be consuming fewer calories without needing to count them. You’ll be eating better calories at certain times of the day, this whole idea of nutrient timing, your body handles different nutrients better at different times – that’s all kind of interwoven with these pillars of nutrition.

Using the pillars in combination will allow you to lose weight without counting calories, because we’re all very busy people, and don’t necessarily have time to sit down and count calories and worry about everything that goes into your mouth.

However, if you just structure your food choices in a way like I outlined in the 6 Pillars, then the food choices will take into consideration caloric amounts and you don’t even have to think about it.

Weight is just what the scale says, so that could be fat, could be water, which could be lean body mass. If you’ve crash-dieted in the past, you see the scale just drops. Your scale weight goes down really quickly, because you will be losing water weight, some fat, but you’re also going to be losing muscle.

When you shift your focus to be just on fat loss, we will be losing body fat. You will lose some water weight, because you will be slightly reducing your carbohydrate consumption. However, you will not going to be losing lean body mass.

Focusing on losing fat allows for better weight loss long-term because you’re maintaining your lean body mass. This will boost and support your metabolism, which is going to allow you to keep losing fat and keep losing weight over a longer period of time.
