Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a condition born out of exagerrated thoughts. This condition can lead the sufferer towards severe anxiety. A person suffering from this disorder is often seen doing the same thing again and again and yet is still not satisfied by it. When the mind does not respond appropriately to normal thoughts, constant worrying about certain things and a habitual response towards a particular activity can cause OCD. For e.g. a child may wash his hands again and again and still feels that the hands are not clean enough. Actually they are suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder. They are so scared of getting affected by germs that they keep constantly washing their hands. They have certain frightening thoughts in their mind and believe that those thoughts could turn to reality, that’s when it leads towards anxiety. They are unable to distinguish between a remote possibility and a probability. People suffering from OCD worry so much, that sometimes they spend the whole day thinking about a way to prevent something bad from happening to them or their family. A high level of anxiety is observed in them. OCD is ranked as the fourth most common mental disorder. It is observed frequently in large percentage of population. In the olden days people suffering from this condition, were sometimes said to have been possessed by a devil. OCD causes continual. Improbable, but frightening thoughts to rise in the mind and then the person seems lost finding a solution for them. The thoughts range from losing control over oneself, to religious cult type ideology. A very common manifestation of the disorder is obsession with hygiene and avoidance of contamination. The thoughts of an OCD affected mind are exaggerated, useless and distressing and it can take a long time for the person to overcome them. OCD is sometimes genetically disposed but more often depends on how the person is reacting to small risks in a changing environment. If the reaction is inappropriate it often means the conscious mind is not getting the proper messages and can indicate OCD, which in the later stages can cause anxiety disorders also.
