Sharing a room with a roommate is not very different from sharing a room with a sibling. There are many similar problems; however, not knowing each other brings up new problems of its own. These can be worked out if you keep a few tips in mind. This article is part 1 of the series that provides tips on connecting well with your roommate and on maintaining a good relationship with your roommate. Good Roommate Relationship Tip #1: Know each other It is important to get to know each other right from the beginning. This means letting each other know your preferences and what you are absolutely unable to tolerate, of course, within your limits. So, if you do not like loud noise, let your roommate know about it. If loud cell phone ring tones irritate you, make sure your roommate is aware of that. If you prefer your room neat and tidy, let him/her know about it. Get to know your roommate as well so that you avoid irritating him/her as well. Communicating your expectations to each other helps avoid problems later. Good Roommate Relationship Tip #2: Address issues while they are still small If you do not like something that your roommate does, make sure you tell him/her. If s/he is taking your stuff without your permission, then it is better to talk it out right away. Maintain good communication at all times. Do not be rude with him or raise your voice if you do not like anything. Express your concerns in a nice, friendly but firm manner such that the roommate does not feel offended but gets the point.
