A good relationship with your roommate is important to lead a pleasant and supportive college life. This article is part 2 of the series that provides tips on connecting well with your roommate and on maintaining a good relationship with your roommate. Good Roommate Relationship Tip #3: Your roommate's stuff is not yours Your roommate's stuff is not yours and therefore, do not make the mistake of borrowing, using or otherwise taking anything for any purpose without taking his/her permission first. Good Roommate Relationship Tip #4: Lock your door and windows Does it seem like this has nothing to do with good roommate relationship? Think again – how would you feel if you lost valuable items while your roommate was out without locking the door and windows? This is also necessary for safe living on campus. Being safe will not only avoid problems later but will also give a safe feeling to your roommate. It would show that you care for your belongings as well as his/her. Good Roommate Relationship Tip #5: Bringing in your friends/study group If your roommate prefers to study alone or does not like other people entering the room, then you need to respect his feelings. It is not to say that you don't get to bring your friends or study group, but rather that you limit this. If the two of you have different preferences with respect to studying that is one prefers studying alone while the other prefers a study group, then find some mid way. Perhaps you could spend time with your study group in their rooms. Another option is to that you get your room on alternate days and your roommate uses the library when you use the room with your study group. Compromise is the key to resolving such conflict in interests.
