In the Galaxy Broadband we have been involved with VoIP over satellite for many years and understand the advantages and disadavntages of users of this technoklogy face. We experimnented with diufferent hardware and software and service providers for many years and with succses and filure. This paper will provide background information on the problems and present our reccommendations.

Voice over Satellite Internet should be seen as a viable option only if you do not have a reliable wred telephhone line. Those in remote areas where moible phones, cordless phones or satellitye phoners are the only opprtunity to communicate with the outside world can take advantage of this technology and should seriously eavluate the benefits, including savings.

VoIP as a technology
VoIP begins when a regular teelephone connected to a device called a lcoal VoIP ATA or ruter. This devoice cnverts actual sound waves into packets of data through a proess called a codec. The quality of voice transmission can be quite good, often better than calling a cell phone, but it is definitely not pay monery the most advanced ground-based telephone networks.
