A stye starts to form in the sweat glands of the eyelids. The infected area will display a number of symptoms including red, swollen and pus-filled bumps either along or on the inside of the eyelid. The life cycle of an ordinary stye ranges from a few days to a week when the infection will usually burst on its own. The staphylococcus aureus bacterium, which is the source of the infection, is spread when one comes into contact with an infected person and thereafter touches the eye. One of the reasons why it is very difficult to completely get rid of stye is because the bacteria occur naturally on the human skin.

If a stye lingers longer than one week, then it is time to have a doctor prescribe an antibiotic eye cream. For more persistent and widespread infections, oral antibiotics should also be used with the eye cream. Antibiotic eye drops are also available and help to alleviate the pain and discomfort that comes along with the styes. In cases where the patient experiences more pain than usual and finds it difficult to bear, a doctor may recommend the bursting and drainage of the stye during which process a local anesthetic will be applied.

There are many times when doctor intervention might not be required. Even when it is, there are simple measures you can take that can help provide relief. One of these is the use of a hot compress several times a day. By applying the moderately heated and damp cloth to the infected area for a period of 10 minutes four times a day the rupture of the stye is encouraged to happen sooner. Under no circumstance should a patient attempt to squeeze or pop a stye as this physical contact can lead to the spread of the bacteria to other glands on the eyelid leading to an even bigger problem than there was before.

But overall, and considering that the cause is bacterial, the number one method of prevention is by adhering to good hygiene habits. For instance, it is important that one practice not sharing towels as this is one of the easiest ways for the bacteria to spread. When infected, it is wise that you discard any parts of the eye make-up kit as you undergo treatment as the bacteria left on makeup brushes can lead to recurrences. In addition, ensure that you regularly and thoroughly clean the makeup kit. Visit http://www.laser-eye-surgery-review.com/stye.html
