Portrait photography is one of the most popular forms of photography. Most people who know how to point and shoot a camera will say they are a portrait photographer. There is however a big difference in quality between an amateur and a professional. Professional portrait photographers do more than just record a person’s image on film. They in some way show character and emotion through their photographs. To help you shoot better portraits, here are some tips and great St Louis locations to get you started.
Rapport
Building rapport with your subject is often overlooked, but is the first thing that you should learn. This important skill will help your subjects relax, have fun, and be more comfortable in front of the camera. All of this results in more natural looking photographs that will convey emotion and unique expressions.
Personality
Bringing out personality in photos has a lot to do with the previous tip of building rapport, but goes one step further. As a photographer you have to make sure your subject stays relaxed, and might even have to entice your subject to let there personality shine. Of course you still have to capture this on film, which requires patience and being ready to take the shot when the opportunity comes.
Lighting
Most photographers prefer natural lighting. However since you want to emphasize the person’s face and character, you should always consider using artificial lighting. Be sure that light is evenly distributed, or that it satisfies the angle that you want to emphasize. Lighting can have a great effect especially if you want a serious picture.
Background
Most portraits have light backgrounds to emphasize the subject. You can also use the environment to add more character to your subject. St. Louis has some great locations for taking portraits photographs. If you want to incorporate nature in you pictures there is Forest Park, the Botanical Gardens, or one of area wineries. For adding some St. Louis character to the photo, there is the Arch, Busch Stadium or historic St. Charles. Regardless of the background or location, be sure that the colors of your background and the dress of your subject compliment each other.
Plan
Be sure that you are ready before you go to the photo shoot. Not only that you have all the equipment that you need, but also have some ideas of the shots you want to take. You should also make sure your subject is prepared by discussing the shoot and making sure they bring clothes that fit the location.
